Asteroid Day short-stories Contest 2020 Terms and Conditions

Asteroid Day short-stories Contest 2020 Terms and Conditions

If an asteroid were about to collide with Earth right now, what would you save? Or what would you do to protect the humankind? How do you think you could save us? We invite you to answer all of these questions and whichever crossing your mind at the fifth version of the International Asteroid Day Short-Story contest 2020.

The International Asteroid Day is held every June 30 on the anniversary of the event where a 35-meter asteroid devastated an area of about 2,000 km2 in the small Russian region, called Tunguska in 1908 (112 years ago!). Every late June, the international scientific community, besides from artist, writers, and filmmakers, led by the Ph.D. in Astrophysics and former guitarist of the British band Queen, Brian May, come together to raise awareness among citizens about a potentially hazardous asteroid and the risk of a new collision with Earth.

That is why this 2020, the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS invites you once again to be part of this celebration writing a short story, in no more than 112 words (600 characters), about asteroids and whatever inspires you from them.

1.-The theme of the stories – 112 words (600 characters) only– must be about asteroids, based on a real story or fiction.

2.-Stories must be unprecedented (never published before) and original (written by you).

3.-To apply to this contest, you have to fill out a web form made for this contest. You can find it at www.astrofisicamas.cl/concursorelatos2020

4.-Print applications will not be accepted.

5.-Students from schools in Chile can be part of this contest, writing only one story per student, in the following categories:

* Elementary students (3rd to 8th grade)

* High school students (1st to 4th grade)

6.- For the first time, this year will be an adult category, in which people over 18 years old could send their short stories following the terms and conditions above.

7.- Applications will be accepted from the next Thursday, April 30 at 8:00 a.m and closed on Friday, May 29 at 5:00 p.m, no exceptions.

8.-The judges are formed by the high-profile journalist and science communicator Nicolás Luco; the geologist, MAS adjunct researcher, and also Professor at Universidad Católica del Norte Millarca Valenzuela, and the Ph.D. in Astrophysics, both MAS and the Institute of Astrophysics UC associated researcher Alejandro Clocchiatti, besides a pre-selection committee coordinated by the contest organization. The evaluation of every story will be completely anonymous.

9.- The notice of contest will be delivered through a postal office, which will be subject to limitations and availability in the context of the national/international contingency.

– Educación Básica (3ero a 8vo Básico).

– Educación Media (1ero a 4to Medio).
