Once famous for a telephone company advertising, Cachiyuyo is one of the best towns with ideal conditions in the Atacama region to observe the total eclipse next July 2. A group of astronomical centers, therefore, joint together to celebrate there “La Gran Fiesta del Eclipse” (The big celebration of the Eclipse), which will invite both the local community and the nearby areas to turn this phenomenon into a huge celebration.
According to local government estimations, at least 2500 people will gather at Cachiyuyo, one of the five satellite camps carried out in the Atacama region to receive the tourist that will visit the area looking for the best spot to see the next solar eclipse on July 2. And even though in this town the totality will last only 1 minute and 9 seconds, is one of the best areas to observe the eclipse according to a study of the Chilean Foundation of Astronomy.
It is for that reason that the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS, in cooperation with the Millennium Nucleus for Planetary Formation NPF, and the Physics and Astronomy Institute of Universidad de Valparaíso IFA, joined to Vallenar City Hall -Cachiyuyo is part of this City Hall- to carry out “La Gran Fiesta del Eclipse” (the Big Celebration of the Eclipse), celebration which will fill with astronomy the local community and the visitors. All of this has the support of the Joint Committee Funding’s ESO-Government of Chile, and the Millennium Science Initiative.
The activities will begin at midday, and during the whole day, we will have talks and workshops, like contests and short activities for children, including an astronomical play. Of course, there will be solar telescopes for solar observations, and also certificate glasses for free to see the eclipse. To integrate everybody to this huge celebration, it will be a space to develop inclusive astronomy, having special activities for individuals with a visual disability or low vision.
As the totality will be at 16:39, near to dusk, the whole activity is ending with night observations, having 20 astronomers of the institutions involved guiding the attendants not only to observe this unique phenomenon but also to understanding it and enjoying.
“The bond with the participating institutions has been very important. Their experience has encouraged and also helped us to face this enormous but lovely challenge that is the Eclipse of July 2. You can clearly see their genuine commitment to open up to the community, not only to the scientific field but also to whom knew nothing about it months ago. Now, we are getting ready for this tremendous event happening in our country, mainly in Vallenar, between Domeyko and Incahuasi,” Vallenar’s Mayor states, Cristian Tapia Ramos, which municipal staff have deployed to carry out the three satellite camps out of the five in the Atacama region, which is part of its territory.

With the mission of preparing the local community, the Vallenar City Hall has performed a series of actions in cooperation with business people, tour-operators, hotels, merchants, and entrepreneurs to get ready to receive tourists that will arrive at the region to observe this astronomical phenomenon.
Many of them will be in the totality zones so that besides the astronomical activities that MAS, NPF, and IFA are organizing at Cachiyuyo, people will also have the privilege to enjoy the best of the local commerce. A celebration that will turn the eclipse into an unforgettable memory.

Otrora famoso por una publicidad de una compañía telefónica, Cachiyuyo es una de las localidades con mejores condiciones de la región de Atacama para observar el eclipse total del próximo 2 de julio. Es por eso que un grupo de centros astronómicos nacionales se unieron para celebrar ahí la Gran Fiesta del Eclipse, que invitará tanto a la comunidad local como la de zonas aledañas a hacer de este fenómeno una gran celebración.
Según estimaciones del gobierno regional serán al menos 2.500 personas las que se darán cita en Cachiyuyo, uno de los cinco campamentos satélites que se organizarán en la región de Atacama para recibir a los turistas que visitarán la zona en búsqueda de la mejor posición para observar el próximo eclipse solar del 2 de julio. Y aunque en esta localidad, la totalidad será solamente de 1 minuto y 9 segundos, según un estudio de la Fundación Chilena de Astronomía es una de las mejores zonas para observar el eclipse.
Es por eso que el Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica -MAS-, junto con el Núcleo Milenio de Formación Planetaria NPF y el Instituto de Física y Astronomía de la Universidad de Valparaíso -IFA- se unió a la Municipalidad de Vallenar – municipio al que pertenece Cachiyuyo- para organizar la Gran Fiesta del Eclipse, celebración que durante todo el día llenará de astronomía a la comunidad local y a los visitantes. Todo ello, gracias a los Fondos del Comité Mixto ESO-Gobierno de Chile y de la Iniciativa Científica Milenio.
Las actividades comenzarán al mediodía y durante toda la jornada se realizarán charlas y talleres, concursos y actividades cortas específicas para niños, incluso una obra de teatro astronómica. Por supuesto, se dispondrán telescopios solares para observación solar y se entregarán de forma gratuita lentes certificados para mirar el eclipse. Como una manera de integrar a todos a esta gran fiesta, se dispondrá además de un espacio para desarrollar astronomía inclusiva, con actividades específicas para personas con discapacidad visual o visión reducida.
Como la totalidad se presentará a eso de las 16:39, cerca del atardecer, toda la jornada terminará con observaciones nocturnas. Todo ello, gracias a la presencia de más de 20 astrónomos de las instituciones participantes, que guiarán a los asistentes no sólo a contemplar este especial fenómeno, sino a entenderlo y disfrutarlo.
“El vínculo que hemos tenido con las instituciones participantes ha sido muy importante. Son quienes nos han nutrido de su experiencia y nos ayudado a enfrentar este tremendo pero bonito desafío que significa el eclipse del 2 de julio. Se nota el real compromiso que tienen de abrirse a la comunidad, no solamente al mundo científico, sino también a quienes quizá hace algunos meses no teníamos ningún conocimiento. Hoy día nos estamos empapando y preparando con lo que significa este tremendo suceso que va a acontecer en el país y principalmente en la comuna de Vallenar, entre Domeyko e Incahuasi”, explica el alcalde de la comuna, Cristian Tapia Ramos, cuyo equipo municipal también se ha desplegado en la zona para preparar los tres campamentos satélites, de los cinco de la región de Atacama, que son parte de su territorio.
Trabajo en terreno
Con el objetivo de preparar a la comunidad local, el municipio de Vallenar ha realizado una serie de acciones tanto con empresarios, tour operadores, hoteleros, comerciantes y emprendedores para que estén preparados para recibir a los turistas que llegarán a la zona a contemplar este fenómeno astronómico.
Muchos de ellos, estarán en las zonas de totalidad, por lo que además de las actividades astronómicas que el MAS, NPF e IFA están preparando en Cachiyuyo también se podrá disfrutar de lo mejor del comercio local. Una fiesta que hará del eclipse un recuerdo inolvidable.
