The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Board of Directors reserves this grade only for members that have contributed importantly to this area. This is not the first recognition that the Engineer has received by this institution, since in 2014 was elected President of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society during 2016 and 2017.

In the November’s session, the IEEE Board of Directors elevated Pablo Estévez, Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering (DIE) of Universidad de Chile’s FCFM and Associate Researcher of the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS, to IEEE Fellowfor his contributions to feature selection and visualization of large data sets.”

The IEEE is the world’s largest professional organization in this area; it has more than 400,000 members in 160 countries and presents this important recognition to only those who have reach significant achievements in their own fields, which represents less than the 0.1% of its members.

This is why this nomination is a huge honor for Estévez, who is also the current President of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) and the first DIE Professor to be elevated to this grade.

“It’s a great honor presented by my peers abroad, a really significant achievement in my career that is based on the support of my colleagues and students. Also, it’s an honor for the Department of Electrical Engineering, Universidad de Chile and MAS, the institutions that I work with.” Estévez states.

A new grade that also inspires him to follow his already solid career at this international institution: “As President of the Computational Intelligence Society, I have to play the leader role at an international level, which is a new experience for me. This position allows me, among other things, to meet researchers around the globe, as well as promote what we do at MAS. What our institute researches, which is the Time-Domain Astronomy, presents many challenges to computational intelligence and to machine learning, both now and in the new future. In addition to work with large data sets, for example, we also need to face challenges like online detection and classification. Yet, what draws my attention the most is the possibility to develop algorithms to discover what nobody else has ever found through massive data analysis.” Estévez acknowledges

In addition to this recognition, Pablo Estévez was honored as one of The Best Professors of Universidad de Chile during the 174-anniversary celebrations of this institution.
