Asteroid Day short-stories Contest 2018 Terms and Conditions
Have you heard the phrase “We are stardust”? or the theory that affirms that life on Earth would have been formed by the chemical compounds carried by asteroids and comets that crashed into our planet? If an asteroid were about to collide with our planet now, what would you save? Or what would you do to save the humankind? We want you to help us answer all of these questions and more in the third version of the asteroid day short-stories contest, where you have to write no more than 111 words or 600 characters, to celebrate the third edition of the International Asteroid Day.
The Asteroid Day is held every June 30 on the anniversary of the event where a 35-meter asteroid devastated an area of about 2,000 meters in the small Russian region called Tunguska in 1908 – 110 years ago! Every June 30, the international scientific community along with artists, writers, and film directors, led by Brian May, Doctor in Astrophysics and Queen’s guitarist, come together to raise awareness about a potentially hazardous asteroid and the risk of a new collision with the Earth.
This year, once again, the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS inviting you to be part of this celebration, writing a 111-words short-story about asteroids and what these objects inspire you.
1. The main theme –110 words or 600 characters max– has to be about asteroids and be based on a real story or fiction.
2. It has to be an unpublished and original story (written by you).
3. To apply to this contest, you have to fill out a web form specially made for this contest. You can find it at https://forms.gle/uaXZ8c5yeeTK7B3q6
Print applications will not be accepted.
4. Students from schools in Chile can be part of this contest, writing only one story per student, in the following categories:
* Elementary students (3rd to 8th grade)
* High school students (1st to 4th grade)
5. Applications are accepted from Monday, May 20th at 8:00 a.m. untill Monday, June 17 at 17:00 p.m.
6. The judges are Carolina Undurraga, co-author of the book Bruno y el Big Bang, deputy director of the Chilean Geology Society and also researcher at MAS Millarca Valenzuela; and Doctor in Astrophysics and researcher at MAS and the Institute of Astrophysics UC, Alejandro Clocchiatti. Plus a pre-selection committee coordinated by the contest organizers. The final evaluation of these short stories will be completely anonymous.
7. The judges will choose one winner in each category, the decision is no subject to appeal. The two winners will receive an UpClose binocular by Celestron (10×50)
8. Bases Concurso de Relatos Breves Día del Asteroide 2019
¿Has escuchado la frase somos polvo de estrellas? ¿La teoría de que parte de la vida en la Tierra se gestó con compuestos químicos que trajeron asteroides y cometas que chocaron con nuestro planeta? Si un asteroide estuviera por colisionar con la Tierra ahora ¿Qué salvarías? O ¿Qué harías para proteger a la humanidad? Todas estas preguntas y más son las que nos gustaría que nos ayudaras a responder en la tercera versión del concurso de microcuentos de 111 palabras (600 caracteres) para celebrar la tercera edición del Día Internacional del Asteroide.
Este evento se conmemora todos los 30 de junio recordando la colisión de un asteroide, de unos 35 metros de diámetro, que en 1908 (¡hace 111 años!) azotó a la remota región rusa de Tunguska arrasando con una superficie de más de 2.000 km2. Todos los fines de junio la comunidad científica internacional, además de artistas, escritores y realizadores cinematográficos, encabezados por el Doctor en Astrofísica y guitarrista de la banda Queen, Brian May, se unen para concientizar a la población sobre el peligro de que un asteroide potencialmente peligroso vuelva a chocar la Tierra.
Nuevamente este año, el Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica MAS te invita a ser parte de esta celebración a través de un relato escrito corto, de no más de 111 palabras (600 caracteres), acerca de asteroides y lo que ello te inspire.
1.- La temática de los cuentos -que deben tener una extensión máxima de 111 palabras (600 caracteres)- debe ser sobre asteroides, basado en la realidad o ser una historia ficticia.
2.- Los relatos deben ser inéditos (no haber sido publicados anteriormente) y originales (de propia autoría).
3.- Los cuentos se deberán postular únicamente a través del formulario web destinado para este concurso, el que se encuentra en https://forms.gle/uaXZ8c5yeeTK7B3q6
No se aceptarán postulaciones en papel.
4.- Podrán participar estudiantes de colegios de todo Chile, con un máximo de un cuento por postulante, en las siguientes categorías:
– Educación Básica (3ero a 8vo Básico).
– Educación Media (1ero a 4to Medio).
5.- El plazo de recepción se abrirá el lunes 20 de mayo a las 8:00 horas y cerrará impostergablemente el lunes 17 de junio a las 17:00 horas.
6.- El jurado estará formado por la co autora del libro Bruno y el Big Bang, Carolina Undurraga; la geóloga, Vicepresidenta de la Sociedad Geológica de Chile e investigadora del MAS, docente de la Universidad Católica del Norte, Millarca Valenzuela y el Doctor en Astrofísica, investigador del MAS y del Instituto de Astrofísica UC, Alejandro Clocchiatti, además de un comité de preselección coordinado por la organización de este concurso. La evaluación de los trabajos presentados será completamente anónima.
7.- Este jurado elegirá dos ganadores –decisión que será inapelable – uno de cada categoría, quienes recibirán como premio un binocular UpClose de Celestron (10×50).
