Ñeque Theatre Company, with the support of CONICYT’s Explora Program and the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics, is preparing the production “Bringing the Universe closer: TEDatrical Talk,” a parallel journey through the relation between men and cosmos, and the expansion of scientific knowledge about the Universe. Its official opening night is June 24th at the Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (GAM) in Santiago, and it’s also expected a tour through La Araucanía region. These shows are free of charge.
To reproduce the death of a star in stage; listen to Aristarchus of Samos, the first one to affirm that the Earth revolved around the Sun; or witness the very moment when Galileo Galilei aimed his new invention to the sky, a rustic telescope. All these scenes are part of a production called “Bringing the Universe closer: TEDatrical Talk,” a new project by Ñeque Theatre Company, which is in the works since July 2015 and now will be premiered next June 24th at Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (GAM) in Santiago.
This production won the 2015 CONICYT Explora Project of Valuation and Outreach for Science and Technology and also has the support and scientific advice from Fabiola Arévalo, PhD. in Physics of Universidad de la Frontera, and from the Millennium institute of Astrophysics MAS. It also has the support of Universidad de la Frontera and Universidad Católica de Temuco, where this play will be presented too.
With this new production, Ñeque initiates its new creation line: TEDatrical Talk, a dramatized talk with live music. “We are aware that we are surfing uncharted waters. Is it a play or a scientific outreach talk? Our intention is not answering that question, but to serve as a bridge between arts and science, between arts and education,” comments Felipe Benavente, part of the company and author of the original idea of this production.
The play-writing process was addressed through a diligent search, which needed the analysis of books, documentaries, articles and films related to three topics: the Universe from the point of view of science and mythology of different native people, and lastly the relationship between astronomy and astrology. In addition to interviews with astrophysicists.
All this allowed to put this play together around two central themes: the series of physical events that originated, according to science, the Universe, stars, galaxies, our solar system, the Earth and finally, life; and the relationship between men and cosmos, from the primitive human being to this present day.
MULTIPLICITY OF LANGUAGES
Ñeque Teatral is made up of multidisciplinary professionals with experience in different theater companies (Tryo Teatro Banda, CIT, Universidad de la Frontera’s Company, Teatro Esperpento Company, among others) who gathered to work in Caburga, IX Region of Chile, in order to create contents and artistic experiences that could integrate different areas of science, what’s ancestral and what’s educational. The team of this project is Felipe Benavente, engineer, actor and author of the original idea; María José Benavente, actress and psychologist, who also participated in the original idea; Lindsay Cárdenas, actress and teacher, who is going to create an educational guideline for this show; and Pablo Obreque, actor, musician and audiovisual producer for the live show.
As special guests, they invited José Araya, currently part of the group Tryo Theatre Band, as Director; Karen Carreño, actress and writer in charge of leading the play-writing process; Gabriela González in charge of the design and Esteban Lorca in charge of set and props.
Their first play was “Ningún Pájaro Canta por Cantar,” also winner of a CONICYT Explora Project, which suggested the problem of native forests’ deforestation both from an environmental point of view and from the Mapuche people’s vision, and which has the participation of Lorenzo Aillapán, Mapuche’s birdman.
If in that play coexisted actors-musicians, puppets, dolls and birdman in stage, now in “Bringing the Universe closer: TEDatrical Talk” the idea is to tell a story in a talk-format with four narrators, who apart from telling the story, they will have to take over different roles and play along with the live music. José Araya, artistic director of this production, specifies that understanding our Universe as an space of constant experimentation, “ ‘Bringing the Universe closer’ is inspired in the beauty of its laws, dynamics and its profound and mysterious diversity, so we could create an experimental show with elements of a TED Talk, audiovisual, live music, objects, design and in situ play-writing.”
For Gabriela González, designer of this production, this challenge cannot leave anyone indifferent: to represent visually the Universe. “It has been the hardest job I’ve ever done, since it’s impossible to compete with its beauty. It was necessary to look in other places, which was a long process of experimentation. First, we had to figure the proportions out, because talking about the Universe is talking about extremely big stuffs y other incredibly little. So, in order to illustrate these enormous differences of scale, we went for the option of presenting two simultaneous dimensions: one scale of what a human eye can see and another scale of what a camera’s zoom can reach, which allowed us to play to the illusion of what’s infinitely big, but with really small objects. The camera also helped us to illustrate the intense activity of observation and contemplation of the human being throughout its history.”
At the same time, there’s a second idea related directly to the objects in itself. “ As a result of all this creative process being characterized by what’s playful, it was naturally necessary to use toys and everyday objects, in order to bring the public closer to this area. We are talking about recognizable objects that through a game of recycling we can build stories and create illusions,” explains Gabriela.

Con apoyo del Programa Explora CONICYT y el Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica, la compañía Ñeque Teatral prepara el montaje “Acercando el Universo: Charla TEDatral”, un viaje en paralelo por la relación del hombre con el cosmos y el desarrollo del conocimiento científico sobre el universo. Su estreno oficial será el 24 de junio, en el Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (GAM) de Santiago, y también realizará una itinerancia por la región de La Araucanía. Funciones con entrada liberada.
Recrear sobre el escenario la muerte de una estrella, escuchar a Aristarco de Samos, el primero que dijo que la Tierra giraba en torno al Sol, o asistir al momento preciso en que Galileo Galilei apuntó al cielo su nuevo invento, un rústico telescopio. Todo esto es parte de la obra “Acercando el Universo: Charla TEDatral”, nuevo proyecto que la compañía Ñeque Teatral prepara desde julio de 2015 para estrenar el próximo 24 de junio en el Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (GAM) de Santiago.
La puesta en escena es un Proyecto Explora CONICYT de Valoración y Divulgación de la Ciencia y la Tecnología – 2015, y además cuenta con la asesoría en la investigación de Fabiola Arévalo, doctora en ciencias físicas de la Universidad de la Frontera, y del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica (MAS). También cuenta con el apoyo de la Universidad de la Frontera y Universidad Católica de Temuco, donde se llevarán a cabo varias presentaciones.
Con este nuevo estreno, Ñeque inaugura su nueva línea de creación: la charla TEDatral, un formato de charla teatralizada con música en vivo. “Sabemos que estamos metiéndonos en territorios poco explorados. ¿Es un espectáculo teatral o una charla de divulgación científica? Nuestra intención no es dar respuesta a esa pregunta, sino servir de puente entre las artes y las ciencias, entre las artes y la educación”, comenta Felipe Benavente, parte de la compañía y gestor de la idea de este montaje.
La dramaturgia fue elaborada a través de una acuciosa búsqueda, que requirió de revisión de libros, documentales, artículos y películas en torno a tres temáticas: el universo desde la mirada de la ciencia, el universo desde la mirada mitológica de distintos pueblos originarios y la relación entre astronomía y astrología. Todo esto sumado a entrevistas con los científicos del área astrofísica.
Todo esto permitió articular la obra en torno a dos ejes conductores: la seguidilla de eventos físicos que dieron origen, según la ciencia, al universo, las estrellas, galaxias, nuestro sistema solar, la tierra y finalmente la vida; y la relación del hombre con el cosmos, desde el ser humano primitivo hasta el día de hoy.
MULTIPLICIDAD DE LENGUAJES
Ñeque Teatral está formada por profesionales multidisciplinarios con experiencia en diversas compañías teatrales (Tryo Teatro Banda, CIT, Compañía Universidad de la Frontera, Compañía Teatro Esperpento, entre otras) que se reunieron a trabajar en Caburga, IX región, con el fin de crear contenidos y experiencias artísticas que integren diversas áreas de las ciencias, lo ancestral y lo educativo. Entre ellos se cuentan Felipe Benavente, ingeniero, actor y gestor de la idea de este nuevo montaje; María José Benavente, actriz y psicóloga, también gestora de la idea; Lindsay Cárdenas, actriz y profesora, quien creará un cuadernillo pedagógico para el espectáculo; y Pablo Obreque, actor, músico y audiovisualista de la puesta en escena.
Como invitados especiales participan José Araya, actualmente parte del grupo Tryo Teatro Banda, en la dirección; Karen Carreño, actriz y guionista encargada de guiar el proceso dramatúrgico; Gabriela González encargada del diseño integral de la obra y Esteban Lorca en la construcción de escenografía y utilería.
Su primera obra fue “Ningún Pájaro Canta por Cantar”, también ganadora de un proyecto Explora CONICYT, que plantea la problemática de la deforestación del bosque nativo tanto desde el punto de vista medio ambiental como de la cosmovisión del pueblo mapuche, y que cuenta con la participación de Lorenzo Aillapán, el hombre pájaro mapuche.
Si en esta obra conviven en escena actores-músicos, marionetas, muñecos y el hombre pájaro, en “Acercando el Universo: Charla TEDatral” la idea es contar la historia en formato de charla a través de cuatro relatores, que además de narrar deberán asumir diversos roles dramáticos y acompañar con música en vivo. José Araya, director artístico del montaje, precisa que entendiendo nuestro universo como un espacio de experimentación constante, “Acercando el Universo” “se inspira en la belleza de sus leyes, dinámicas y en su profunda y misteriosa diversidad, para crear un espectáculo de experimentación con elementos de charla TED, audiovisual, música en vivo, objetos, diseño y dramaturgia in-situ”.
Para Gabriela González, diseñadora integral del proyecto, el desafío no puede dejar indiferente a nadie: representar visualmente el universo. “Es lo más complejo que me ha tocado hacer, ya que es imposible competir con su belleza. Hay que buscar por otros rincones, lo que fue un largo proceso de experimentación. Primero había que resolver el tema de las proporciones, ya que hablar del universo es hablar de cosas extremadamente grandes y otras increíblemente pequeñas. Para ayudar a ilustrar estas enormes diferencias de escala, se optó por presentarle al espectador dos dimensiones simultáneas: una escala de lo que ven sus ojos y otra de lo que alcanza el zoom de una cámara, con lo que es posible jugar a la ilusión de lo inmensamente grande, pero con objetos realmente pequeños. La cámara también nos ayuda a ilustrar la intensa actividad de observación y contemplación del ser humano a lo largo de su historia”.
En paralelo existe una segunda idea relacionada directamente con los objetos en sí mismos. “A raíz de que todo el proceso creativo estuvo marcado por lo lúdico, naturalmente se nos hizo necesario utilizar juguetes y elementos cotidianos, para acercar aún más al espectador al tema. Se trata de objetos reconocibles con los que a través del juego de la reutilización podemos construir historias y generar ilusiones”, detalla Gabriela.
