SDSS

[:en]The Sloan Digital Sky Survey started to operate in 2000, after a decade of working in its design and construction. From that moment on, it has gone through many phases, which have involved numerous surveys that work with images taken from a special telescope located in Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico, USA. These surveys’ main goal is to take images of extremely faint objects on large segments in the sky, being the galaxies outside the Milky Way one of the main targets. The images captured with the SDSS camera are being stored in computers, which allows the scientists, among them are scientists from the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics MAS, to analyze this big data, such as size, shine or color of the objects found. The SDSS currently has three surveys in progress: eBOSS, APOGEE-2 and MaNGA[:es]El Sloan Digital Sky Survey comenzó a operar en el año 2000, luego de una década de diseño y construcción. Desde ese momento, ha pasado por diversas fases, las que han involucrado múltiples surveys que trabajan con recopilaciones de imágenes tomadas con un telescopio especial ubicado en el Observatorio Apache Point, en el estado de Nuevo México. Estas survey, en las que participan científicos del Instituto Milenio de Astrofísica, tienen como objetivo tomar imágenes de objetos muy tenues sobre grandes segmentos de cielo, siendo las galaxias fuera de nuestra Vía Láctea uno de sus principales objetivos.  Las imágenes que se registran con la cámara SDSS se almacenan en computadores, lo que permite a los científicos medir una gran cantidad de información sobre cada uno de los objetos encontrados como su tamaño, brillo y color. Actualmente son tres las investigaciones que comprenden SDSS: eBOSS, APOGEE-2, y MaNGA.[:]
